BBC Wales puts LP's 'Start Something' in one of the top 10 albums of the 2000s decade in whelsh music:

Lostprophets - Start Something (2004)
Pontypridd's rockers took America by storm in 2004 as Last Train Home rocketed to Number One in their Alternative Rock charts. They were so successful at infiltrating the international rock scene that few people realised they weren't American scenesters. Packed with hit singles, this album took them from clubs to arenas and gave millions of teenagers poster fodder for their bedroom walls.

ian watkins blasts jared leto:
LOSTPROPHETS star IAN WATKINS has taken aim at JARED LETO for complaining about a legal spat that threatened his band 30 SECONDS TO MARS' album release, insisting the actor-turned-rocker had it easy.
30 Seconds To Mars was sued by the parent company of their label Virgin Music for $30 million (£18.75 million) in 2008 over claims they failed to produce an agreed number of albums.
Leto spoke openly about the difficulties the band faced while recording their third album This Is War during the ongoing dispute, telling MTV, "We spent two years of our lives working on that record, and it was us against the world. Everything that was going on was brutal... It was a case of survival, to tell the truth."
But the Lostprophets frontman maintains Leto should stop grumbling about the ordeal - because the Welsh band endured a worse struggle to make their upcoming disc, The Betrayed.
Watkins tells Kerrang! magazine, "We were always determined to make it happen, but it has been tough. When I hear Jared Leto saying he went to hell and back writing the 30 Seconds To Mars album it makes me think, 'I want to f**king kill you!' Went to the swimming pool and back more like. This, our band, is all we have - there is no safety blanket for us. So we were always like, 'S**t, we need to get this record out and it needs to be amazing because if it doesn't come out we are f**ked.'
"The making of The Betrayed was a transitional period for me, a period when a lot of things in my life were changing, with relationships and moving to L.A. And, of course, the other guys had their own issues too. For the past 10 years we've been living our dream and I guess all the insecurity and confusion around making this album gave us time to realise that we didn't want to lose it all."
Lostprophets scrapped an album's worth of material and rerecorded The Betrayed, pushing back its original release date by three years due to further problems with producers and their record company.

Lostprophets
Lostprophets’ 4th album was originally started in 2007 but after recording an albums worth matieral, the band decided to scrap it and start over. This eventually led to ‘The Betrayed’, which will be released in January on Visible Noise (UK)/Sony (US). — I wonder if these guys will be worth listening to again.

from mike's blog:
So who else here thought when they were kids we'd have flying cars by 2010?? we were conned!! its certainly not the 2010 that Arthur C. Clarke envisioned (tho it seems Orwell was pretty spot on). Maybe its just me but 2010 still sounds like the future.. I guess that comes from watching way too much sci fi back in the 80s. Anyways, I digress.....
Ive never been one for writing blogs but today as i was driving up PCH i started thinking about the last 10 years and everything that has happened.. something occured to me.... the gig that kickstarted Lostprophets as we now know it was right there smack at the beginning of the decade.. February 3rd to be exact.
At the end of 1999 we had just finished the Fake Sound of Progress demo. We had spent somewhere in the region of a year writing and recording at frontline in caerphilly and that demo was the result. It was very different to the previous demos we had done in everyway possible. Recorded by stu, the tunes were massive, it had a great little inlay designed by Ian, it was the blueprint for what we were to become.
I was putting on gigs in Cardiff around that time so i booked Earthtone9 to play the mighty bogiez and we were gonna play and use it to launch our demo. The rest of the bill was filled by cardiff ska punks Project Pigeon the mighty tripcage. Things were a little different back then. If it had been now, we probably would have self released it as an EP or something but we were 5 (jamie came later) poor kids from ponty so a couple of shoeboxes full of maxell c60s bought using my makro staff discount would have to do. I booked the bands, Ian designed the posters and a T- Shirt, which if anyone has one of these theyre pretty damn rare, we only printed around 20 of them... actually i think i still have a poster in my nans attic, i'll have to dig it out. we paid some fella who had the monopoly on putting posters up in cardiff at the time.. who'd have thought it? we used to put all our own up, driving around in a car with wallpaper paste but this guy who got paid by all the clubs to put theirs up tore them down... nice one! I believe we went under the name of The New Noise Collective or something like that.. I did all the booking and stuff whilst in work using makros phones..ooops. I was refitting a store in birmingham at the time but spent half my days calling people trying to get us gigs or booking bands to play cardiff.
On the day of the gig i call Bogiez and speak to dungeon master (if youre from south wales and went to gigs in the 90s you know who im talking about.. legend.. master of the umba noise) to ask him what time to load in etc and he tells me that the club has closed down.. no PA, stage torn down.. i call Clwb Ifor Bach, who in the past have never let us put on shows there, tell them the scoop and they were awesome and let us do the gig there.. My 2 house mates were equally awesome standing down by bogiez redirecting people to the welsh club. I cant remember much about playing that night, i just remember the vibe.. we had around 200 heads in and it was banging, people went off for all the bands and it felt like it was the start for us. we gave all our demos away, sold a couple of shirts and started the buzz around south wales.
That was almost 10 years ago.. February 3rd 2000. we start our next UK tour February 4th 2010.. 10 years and 1 day and 4 albums later... maybe im looking too deeply into it but i feel like that has some meaning. Back then we did everything ourselves and we've returned to that ethos with The Betrayed and its just as exciting now as it was 10 years ago. even more so in fact as i truly believe this is the best album we've done to date.
Its been a crazy decade for me as im sure it has for the other guys.. and its all been made possible by people supporting my band and im incredibly humbled by that and eternally grateful. Aside from my family this band is all that ive got.. im not a rich kid, i dont have an acting career and i certainly dont have a trustfund waiting for me. Thank you all once again. i do infact have another project in the pipeline and i'll tell more later, very excited....
...and speaking of family, 2009 was the most amazing year.. my daughter is the most incredible little thing. she'll be side of stage in feb in the little pink ear defenders..
So kiddies, if we believe the movies when i write my next blog in 2020 we'll then have flying cars, hover boards, replicants, game shows where we hunt criminals, all which will be irrelevant as we would all have died in a nuclear holocaust anyways..
I spent the millenium over chiplins house with all my mates chilling, i spent 2010 writing a blog.. never have been big on new years but i am very very excited for 2010.. battle ready, combat tested

the AU review gives the betrayed an 8/10 review:
The fourth studio album from Welsh band Lostprophets has been some time coming, but the wait was well worth it. The Betrayed, due for release in January 2010, takes us through a combination of musical styles – with some songs reminiscent of the progressive rock style of the first album ‘The Fake Sound Of Progress’ combined with more radio friendly songs (A Better Nothing, Where We Belong) that are similar style to hugely popular 2006 release ‘Liberation Transmission.’
What Ian Watkins and co. have accomplished in the making of this album, is finding a happy medium, and a happy balance between keeping new and old fans happy (think to 2nd album, ‘Start Something’)
The album opens on the crashing drums, introducing us to the first song cleverly titled ‘If It Wasn’t For Hate, We’d Be Dead By Now.’ After the first minute, Ian Watkins vocals reach that soaring level we are so accustomed to. Not quite Liberation Transmission, not quite Fake Sound of Progress.
The first obvious thing is the heavy emphasis and focus on some solid drums and clever guitar work. Where for the majority of Liberation Transmission, Watkins vocals had a more focal role, with the odd guitar solo thrown in (‘4AM forever etc.), in The Betrayed you can’t help but notice the obvious emphasis being placed on the instruments, creating a heavier sound, not un-similar to their original style.
The second track ‘Dstryr and Dstryr’ has a similarity to song ‘Burn Burn’ (‘Start Something’) with midpoint in the song Ian’s soft vocals building up to become louder, making it the sort of song you just want to chant along to.
The lyrics and build up in this one – ‘Destroyer, destroyer we live inside of you’ is in a very similar style to the point in Burn Burn – ‘Burn Burn, for us, for them, for you.’ The defiance in this song and in ultimately in the album is that trademark Lostprophets style that had been previously missing from Liberation Transmission.
Track ‘It’s Not The End Of The World But I can See it From Here’ may as well been stamped with ‘Lostprophets.’ It is the Lostprophets we are accustomed too, whether they are leaning towards progressive rock, or being more mainstream – catchy lyrics and tune, awesome guitar solo, and Ian’s distinctive vocals.
‘Where We Belong’ is an obvious single choice for the band, with the lyrics portraying the journey taken towards the making of the album.
Stand out tracks from the CD, would have to be ‘Dstryr Dstryr, If It Wasn’t For Hate We’d Be Dead Right Now,’ ‘Streets Of Nowhere’ (the boys at their mainstream best- try not singing along to this song) and ‘Next Stop Atro City’ (An awesomely fast paced song, catchy lyrics and because who doesn’t like a song that showcases Ian Watkins screaming vocals.)
Overall, I would recommend picking up a copy of this CD. Lostprophets have made a real effort to keep older and newer fans happy, and it has paid off for them. After a 3 year gap between CDs it’s great to hear some fresh tunes from the boys. As guitarist Stuart Richardson states, the album is ‘No bullshit, no tricks; raw, pissed off, and catchy as f***.’ And if you’re anything like me, you couldn’t ask for anything better or anything more from Lostprophets. Except maybe an Australian tour sometime in the future...
Review Score: 8/10
